What is an annulment?

An annulment is when a marriage is ended and erased completed from the marriage records as if it never legally happened. There are many reasons why a marriage can be annulled. Here are some common examples:

  • Incest – If the spouses are too closely related to each other by blood (consanguinity)
  • Bigamy – If the marriage happens while either spouse was already married
  • Underage – If either spouse were under age and the parents did not consent to the marriage
  • Fraud – If either spouse were deceived into marriage based on the other spouse’s misrepresentation of material facts
  • Mental Incapacity – If either spouse consented while under the influence of drugs or alcohol or were unable to give informed consent
